The Consumer Choice for Television Act, HB 227, was signed by Georgia's governor on March 30, 2007. When the bill became effective on July 1, 2007, it opened up a statewide franchising system for cable and video service providers replacing the previous tedious municipal system. Video service providers and cable service providers are were able to apply for statewide franchise authority with the Secretary of State as of January 1, 2008.
